Where to Get a Passport

The Clayton County Auditor's Office, located at 111 High Street NE, Suite 102 in Elkader, accepts passport applications by appointment Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If an acceptance agent is not available during this time, it will be noted on the website. Passport Books

Passport "books" are required for international flight. The federal fee is $130 for those 16 years and older and $100 for those age 15 and under. The payment must be a check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State.

Passport Cards

Passport "cards" are also available at a reduced fee of $30 for those 16 years and older and $15 for age 15 and under. For U.S. Citizens who frequently travel across the border by land to Canada or Mexico. These cannot be used for air travel. The same application requirements apply.

Execution Fees

When applying for a new passport, an execution fee is required to be paid.  The fee is $35 per applicant no matter what the age of the applicant is.  The fee can be paid in cash or a check payable to Clayton County Auditor. 

Expedite Your Application

If after checking the time frames on the U.S. Department of State's website, you feel you may need to expedite your application you will need to pay an additional fee of $60. You may also choose to consider overnight delivery.  

Validity

Passport books and cards have the same validity.  For applicants age 16 and older the passport is valid for ten (10) years and applicants age 15 and under are valid for five (5) years.

Completed Passport Application

Application forms must be completed in black ink. Application forms can be obtained at the Clayton County Auditor's Office or are available online at the U.S. Department of State's website.

Applicants must appear in person to apply with Drivers License or other Photo ID. For those 15 and under, they must appear with both parents or legal guardian(s). Both parents must sign the application and have valid photo identification. If one of the parents is unable to sign the application, a consent form must be utilized.

Passport Photo

Available at the Clayton County Auditor's Office for $10, payable by cash or check.  They may be taken at the time of application.

Certified Copy of Birth Certificate or Original Citizenship Certificate

A certified birth certificate has a registrar's raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar's signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office, which must be within 1 year of your birth. Please note, some short (abstract) versions of birth certificates may not be acceptable for passport purposes.

Beginning April 1, 2011, all birth certificates must also include the full names of the applicant's parent(s). All applicants must know exact dates of parent's births, whether living or deceased.  Applications will not be processed without this information. Applicants that have been divorced or widowed, and have not remarried, will need to know additional information about the named individual.
