Filing Papers & Signature Requirements for Candidacy
Each candidate must file an affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions with the county auditor for county offices or the Secretary of State’s Office for federal and state offices. The affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions must be filed together or they will be rejected.
Township Clerk/Trustee: No signatures
Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners: 25 signatures from district
Agricultural Extension Council Members: 25 signatures from district
Please contact the Auditor's office for signature requirements on other offices if you were not previously nominated at the Primary Election.
It is always wise to file more than the minimum number of signatures. Candidates may begin collecting signatures at any time. However, the signers must still be eligible electors when the papers are filed in order for the signatures to count. Nomination papers must be filed during the filing period. The filing period begins Monday, August 8, 2016 and ends Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 5 p.m. for all county / township candidates. There are no filing fees.
The filing period differs depending on whether or not a city has primary provisions. If a city with primary provisions has one more than double the number of candidates, a primary election must be held to limit the number of candidates that will be listed on the ballot November 3, 2015. If such an election is needed it will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. The filing period for cities with primary provisions begins Monday, August 10, 2015 and ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2015. The filing period for cities without primary provisions begins Monday, August 24, 2015 and ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2015.
Nomination papers should be filed with the County Auditor not with the City Clerk. This is new this year. Public measures need to be brought to the Auditor's Office by the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on the close of filing.
